Scattering Cross-Section:
• A single scatterer is characterized by its differential scattering crosssection,
σ(t) which depends on its
- size
- reflectivity
- roughness
- directionality and solid angle of reflectance (BRDF)
• The measured echo (return signal) due to a scatterer depends also on the
- incidence angle between emitter/scanner and surface
- original strength of the emitted pulse
- attenuation of the pulse due to distance (R-square-law) and occlusion
